Erik Satie - Three Gymnopedies

Erik Satie’s composer friends must have felt about him the way I feel about Zach Parker.  We are out collecting seashells, and after I’ve scoured the beach looking for colors and shapes, he wanders up and picks something up from right at my feet which is a beautiful shell, broken so that when you look at it you remember your childhood.

To look at the score, the Gymnopedies are not that hard to imagine composing yourself.  But can you compose something that isn’t just your version of the Gymnopedies?  Even each of the Gymnopedies is just a different instantiation of the same set of ideas.  (I like how they all sound at once.) What the Gymnopedies took was not ability, but insight, and once someone has made the insight there is no more work to be done.
