Califone - Heron King Blues
hear “Wingbone”
Classic Califony acoustic guitar playing, big swipes at the strings, keeping close to a rhythmic pulse but syncopated and all the bittersweet notes. Then shifting textures, sounds mechanically produced, organ chords set underneath ominously. Fed back electric menace.
It thickens, then finally thins again into beaten blue stabs at music.
The chorus dips down from heaven now and then. It feels so safe, even while on Earth some beast walking on wing bones is crumbling toward you.
The mechanical clacks away every time you open the hatch. Turn on the TV, stabbed electric pulses, everything’s backwards and forth and the same time, filtered, strained, a few drops of liquid fall out.
It’s all put together so well. I had to take a break in the middle to see if any other music was any good. It was good, too - I imagine a boxer, getting hit hard repeatedly, can only think of this moment, this endless rhythmic pain. But when that was yesterday, the boxer can’t imagine being hit, eating Cheerios seems like such an obvious thing to do. Then I started up Heron King Blues again and I’m back in reality.
